NY RANGERS: IT'S TIME TO RETIRE FRANK BOUCHER'S JERSEY By: Matthew Blittner With the Rangers preparing to retire the iconic number 19 of franchise great Jean Ratelle, it's time to discuss whose sweater should be the next to join Ratelle's in the rafters at MSG. While most hockey fans have at least heard of the famous "GAG Line," there's another line in Rangers' history that deserves recognition. The Goal-A-Game Line of Vic Hadfield, Jean Ratelle, and Rod Gilbert was together from the 1965-66 season until Hadfield was traded to Pittsburgh during the 1973-74 season. Their best season was in 1971-72 when Ratelle, Hadfield, and Gilbert finished third, fourth, and fifth respectively in the NHL scoring race. While the GAG Line was indeed productive, they never won a Stanley Cup. But this next line won not just one Cup but two. Last season, the Rangers began the process of mending their relationship with one of the greatest players in franchise history. Jean Ratelle, the iconic centre on the legendary GAG Line -- as in Goal-A-Game Line -- is having his number 19 sweater raised to the sacred rafters in Madison Square Garden on February 25, 2018. Before the start of last season, the Blueshirts signed coveted college free agent Jimmy Vesey to an Entry Level contract. Vesey had been named the Hobey Baker Award winner for the 2016 NCAA season. After spurning the advances of the Buffalo Sabres and Nashville Predators, Vesey -- hailing from Harvard -- chose to take his talents to Broadway and eventually earned himself a starting gig in time for the Blueshirts' 90th season Home Opener.  In his first ever NHL game, Vesey was thrust into the spotlight against the rival NY Islanders. While the Harvard lad didn't register a point, he did skate a total ice time of 13:02. His soft hands and fleet of foot skating instantly endeared him to his teammates and the fans. A crucial series in Fenway Park began tonight. The Yankees went into Boston trailing their arch-rivals by four games in the standings and needed to win at least  two out of three to remain within reach of the AL East Division leading Red Sox. At this point in the season, to be more than three games back of the team you are chasing is a major obstacle, and with their loss the Yankees are now five back of Boston. So there you have it, the AL East crown may as well belong to the Red Sox. It's the Yankees' record in their last seven games -- 1-2 against the Red Sox and 4-0 against the Mets. What has been dubbed, "Rivalry Week," by the YES Network has turned into a three-series spectacle for the Bronx Bombers. A win to kickstart Rivalry Week was followed by consecutive crushing defeats to the rival Red Sox and then a four-game sweep of the crosstown Mets. As we ready ourselves for the third and final series of Rivalry Week there's a question that needs answering -- are the Yanks playing well? The Yankees need to remove Aroldis Chapman from the closer's role if they wish to make any sort of run this season. Chapman, once the premiere closer in baseball, is now a shell of his former-self, and that's putting it lightly. For the second time in as many appearances, Chapman gave up a home run to a rookie. Sunday night it was a game-tying blast to Red Sox rookie Rafael Devers. Tonight, it was a two-run shot off the bat of Mets' rookie Amed Rosario that took a 5-2 Yankees lead and turned it into a 5-4 nail-biter. NY YANKEES: WHAT'S WRONG WITH AARON JUDGE? By: Matthew Blittner A tale of two halves. Yankees' slugger Aaron Judge has been both the best player and the worst player in baseball this season. For the first-half of the season, Judge was the runaway AL Rookie-of-the-Year candidate and the presumptive favorite for the AL MVP Award. In the second-half, Judge has been as pitiful as he was last season during his initial call-up to the Majors. A first-half that saw him bat .329 with 30 home runs has given way to a second-half that has seen him hit just five home runs and see his batting average drop all the way to .289. So, what has caused this abrupt drop in performance? Many people have pointed to the so called, "curse of the home run derby," as a reason for Judge's second-half slide. By: Matthew Blittner Today, Saturday August 12th, 2017, the New York Yankees announced that once again, presumptive staff ace, Masahiro Tanaka has been placed on the 10-Day DL, this time with right shoulder inflammation. In his fourth season with the Bombers, Tanaka has hit the DL for the third time in his stateside career. A prized pitcher out of Japan, Tanaka came to the Yankees on a 7-year/$155million contract -- signed prior to the 2014 season. With the signing came high expectations and much fanfare.  Initially Tanaka proved he was up to the task of meeting the expectations. He got off to a 12-4 start during the 2014 season, before being shutdown with a partially torn UCL.
