NY RANGERS: PRESEASON GAME 2 PREVIEW VS. DEVILS

By: Matthew Blittner

One down and Five to go.

This year, the Rangers have a six-game slate scheduled for the preseason. After last night's 1-0 OT win against the Islanders, the Rangers now have five games remaining on their exhibition calendar before they begin to count.

Tomorrow, Wednesday September 20th, the Rangers will play host to the rival New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden, with the game starting at 7pm.

Heading into the contest, both teams are 1-0 in preseason play. The Rangers defeated the Islanders Monday night at MSG by a score of 1-0 in overtime. The Devils defeated the Capitals Monday night in Newark by a score of 4-1.

The Devils allowed Washington to open the scoring but they quickly regrouped thanks to a three-goal second period. First-round draft pick Nico Hischier would complete the scoring in the third period as he tallied his first goal with the Devils.

Just like in the Rangers-Islanders game, the Caps and Devils were assessed an inordinate number of penalties -- 20 total, 10 each -- primarily of the slashing variety. With all of those power plays you would be well positioned to think that there were quite a few special teams goals, but alas that was not the case. Aside from a short-handed strike by the Caps, there were no special teams goals scored in the contest.

Back in RangersTown, the 7th Avenue Skaters used today to practice up at the MSG Training Center.

The prospects were impressive for the Rangers during their victory. But not everybody can break camp with the big-league team.

Five players were cut from Rangers' camp. That list consists of: Robin Kovacs, Adam Chapie, Brenden Kotyk, Tim Gettinger, and Ty Ronning.

Gettinger and Ronning were sent back to their Junior teams. Gettinger – Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League; Ronning – Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League.

Kotyk was released from his PTO.

Kovacs and Chapie were assigned to the Rangers AHL affiliate -- the Hartford Wolf Pack.

These cuts leave the Rangers with 49 players still in camp, and that number has to make its way down to the 23-man maximum prior to Opening Night on October 5th.

Among those remaining in camp, Lias Andersson and Filip Chytil seem to have the inside track to a big-league roster spot as head coach Alain Vigneault has stated that they will be given every chance to make the team.

Of course, Chytil still needs to fully recover from his groin injury that he suffered in the Four Nations Tournament last month. He has been practicing, but he has yet to receive clearance to play during the preseason. But that clearance could come at any moment.

With the wealth of talent that the Rangers have stocked in their cabinet this is a fun time to be a fan of the Blueshirts.
